SBO REPORT:Microsoft thinks it has the one.

The company unveiled the Xbox One, an entertainment  sbo  console that wants to be the one system households will need for games, television, movies, sports and other entertainment. It will go on sale later this year, for an undisclosed price.

For the past two years, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has outsold its rivals. But it’s been eight years since that machine came out, and Microsoft is the last of the three major console makers to unveil a new system. In those eight years, Apple launched the iPhone and the iPad, “FarmVille” rose  sbo  and fell and tablets began to threaten desktop computers, changing how people interact with games and beyond.

Now, the stakes are high as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are all using their latest machines not only to draw gamers but also to command the living room. The goal is to extend their reach beyond loyal legions of hardcore gamers and to become as important to our lives at home as smartphones have become to our lives on the go.

Don Mattrick, Microsoft’s president of interactive entertainment business, said the company has spent the past four years working on an “all-in-one home entertainment system.”

At an hour-long unveiling at the company’s Redmond, Wash., headquarters on Tuesday, Microsoft executives used voice controls to switch back and forth   sbo  seamlessly between watching live TV, listening to music, playing a movie and browsing the Internet — all while running apps for stuff like fantasy football and Skype chats on the side of the screen.

“It really extends the home entertainment experience,” Gartner analyst Brian Blau said.

He said the console seems to appeal to “more than just a core gamer in the family” and should be of interest to all types of audiences, from sports players to TV viewers to those who are “social and want to share things.”

The Xbox One unveiling follows Nintendo Co.’s launch of the Wii U in November and Sony Corp.’s tease in February of the upcoming PlayStation 4. Each of the new consoles has shifted away from simply   sbo  serving as gaming machines, as they incorporate streaming media apps and social networking features.

People will be able to connect their cable or satellite set-top box and watch TV through the Xbox One. It will have its own channel guide and allow viewers to change channels by voice command.

Senior Vice President Yusuf Mehdi demonstrated how the console switched quickly between channels after saying show names such as “Mary and Martha” or commands like “watch MTV.” His voice command of “What’s on HBO?” brought up the channel guide for HBO.

“No more memorizing channels or hunting for the remote control,” Mehdi said.

The interface for the TV goes well beyond the functionality in   sbo  the Wii U, which still requires users to press buttons to change the input source on the TV. Xbox One seamlessly flipped between games, movies and TV shows with voice commands.

In addition to the console, Microsoft unveiled a new version of its camera-based Kinect system with better motion and voice detection, including the ability to recognize faces, tell if you’re smiling or talking and gauge your heart rate. In a demonstration, the new sensor detected up to seven people in front of it. Microsoft said the new Kinect will be included with the Xbox One   sbo  and is deeply integrated into the system, but it won’t necessarily always be watching users in their living rooms.

“There’s the ability for you to manage the privacy settings so you can turn it off,” Marc Whitten, Microsoft’s chief product officer of interactive entertainment business, said in an interview in his office after Tuesday’s presentation. “Just like the 360, the biggest thing for us is that you are in control of your privacy.”

The company also introduced a more ergonomic Xbox controller, with a slightly different layout from the Xbox 360 controller and trigger buttons that vibrate. The new console will also add the ability to play Blu-ray discs, matching what Sony   sbo  has in its older PlayStation 3.

The Xbox One won’t require a constant connection to the Internet, but having it will be useful for many of the gaming and entertainment features. The Xbox has been popular largely because of its Xbox Live service, which lets users play games online with other players with annual plans that cost as much as $60 a year.

“The box wants to connect to the Internet,” Whitten said. “That said, we understand the Internet is flakey. It doesn’t always work. We want to make sure you can still play your games, watch movies and watch TV if the Internet is down.”

Despite talk that Microsoft might restrict the use of games previously owned by others, the company confirmed that   sbo  the Xbox One will indeed play used games, but it didn’t provide details on how that would work. It said games for the Xbox 360 won’t work on the new system because the underlying technology is different, though the company said it will continue to make games for the older machine. Whitten said the Xbox 360 “is going to be incredibly vibrant for some time to come.”

Among the games previewed for Xbox One were the military shooter “Call of Duty: Ghosts” from Activision Blizzard Inc., soccer extravaganza “FIFA 14″ from Electronic Arts Inc. and racing simulator “Forza Motorsport 5″ and time bender “Quantum Break,” both from Microsoft Game Studios. Microsoft said more games will be  sbo  shown at next month’s E3 video game conference in Los Angeles.

The company said there will be more than 15 games available exclusively on the Xbox One in its first year, eight of them new franchises. In recent years, the Xbox has been the exclusive home to such popular gaming franchises as sci-fi shooter “Halo” and alien shoot-’em-up “Gears of War.”

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said Tuesday’s presentation was more general than what Microsoft will likely give at E3, where games will be central as thousands of game industry insiders,  sbo  bloggers and journalists gather for the annual industry conference.

“They didn’t focus on games,” he said. “They focused on everything else.”

That everything else includes a multiyear agreement between Microsoft and the National Football League to develop new interactive viewing experiences for pro football games through such products as the Xbox One and Microsoft’s Surface tablet computer. Fans will be able to watch games, chat with other fans, view statistics, access highlights in real time and gather fantasy information about players and teams — all on a single screen. For those who prefer multiple screens, fans can get an even deeper experience on mobile devices such as tablets.

Microsoft is also branching into creating original content beyond games, following the trend of other technology companies such as Amazon.com Inc. and   sbo  Netflix Inc. Director Steven Spielberg will produce a TV series based on the “Halo” games.

The original Xbox debuted in 2001, and its high-definition successor premiered in 2005. The Xbox represents a small fraction of Microsoft’s overall revenue, but it is an important consumer-facing business for Microsoft and offers a way to direct traffic to other Microsoft-owned services, including Skype. Microsoft’s stock fell 23 cents, or less than 1 percent, to close Tuesday at $34.85.

Nintendo kicked off the next generation of gaming in November with the launch of the Wii U, the successor to the popular Wii system. The Wii U features an innovative tablet-like controller, though its graphics is on par with the previous-generation Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. Nintendo   sbo  said the console sold just 3.45 million units by the end of March, well below expectations.

Sony was next, teasing plans for its upcoming PlayStation 4 — without showing the actual box — at a February event in New York. The reaction to that console, which featured richer graphics and more social features, was mixed. The PS4 is expected by the holidays.

Microsoft didn’t waste any time showing off the Xbox One console, new Kinect sensor and Xbox controller at the beginning of Tuesday’s presentation.

SBO REPORT:Mattingly doesn’t feel he’s about to be fired

Beleaguered manager Don Mattingly insisted  sbo  Monday he doesn’t feel he’s about to be fired by the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he has no idea whether he needs to win a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers to keep his job.

Mattingly’s comments came an hour after GM Ned Colletti said his manager is “doing fine” and has kept the team steady despite its last-place showing in the NL West.

Mattingly said he talked with team president Stan Kasten within the past couple of days and didn’t get any indication he was about to be replaced.

“As far as any kind of rumors or whatever they are, I talked to Stan the other day. He didn’t fire me that day,” Mattingly  sbo  said. “I’m still here. Ned didn’t tell me I wasn’t going to be here tomorrow or today. That’s the way I look at it.”

There has been plenty of speculation that Mattingly’s job is in jeopardy. The Dodgers entered Monday night’s game in Milwaukee with a 17-25 record despite a $215 million payroll.

When asked whether he thought he would be managing the team Friday if it didn’t win the three-game series with the Brewers, Mattingly said: “I have no idea. I really haven’t gotten any feeling that Ned’s like on the edge of like, ‘Donnie you’re the problem here.’”

Asked if it was false to say Mattingly would be fired this week,  sbo  Colletti simply said: “My perspective hasn’t changed. I’m done talking about it.”

Mattingly said he was concentrating on finding ways for his team to play better, and said the stars on the club would have to perform well for the Dodgers to win.

He referred to comments from Magic Johnson, part of the Dodgers ownership group, that superstars have to carry teams in the NBA playoffs.

“That’s really what it’s going to boil down to,” Mattingly said. “(Clayton) Kershaw’s going to have to pitch great. (Zack) Greinke’s going to have to pitch great. You know? Our big boys are going to have to play big.”

The big boys in the Dodgers’ lineup haven’t produced as in years past. A group that includes Matt Kemp, Adrian   sbo  Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier ranks next-to-last in the majors in runs.

The bullpen also has been a sore spot, and shortstop Hanley Ramirez has played in only four games due to injuries.

Mattingly didn’t criticize any players, but said the middle of his lineup would have to perform well for the team to win.

“We can sit here and say, you know, Nick Punto having a great year is really nice, but Nick Punto’s not taking us to the promised land. I’ll say that in an honoring way,” he said. “Dee Gordon has to do his thing. Mark Ellis has to do his thing. But they’re   sbo  not taking us to the promised land.

“Adrian and Matt, Hanley when he gets back, Andre, those are the guys, the guys in the middle of the order, that you count on to be run producers,” he said. “That’s what we do. How do you not stay with those guys? You don’t just abandon ship and say, ‘What do you do?’”

Colletti also said he expects better performances from the players, and blaming one person is an easy way out.

The manager and general manager met in Mattingly’s office before the game, and Mattingly said they simply talked about the team and not his job.

Despite the turmoil, Mattingly said he wasn’t concerned about his status.

“You know what? I don’t even worry about that part of it,” he said. “I only worry about turning it around. Really,  sbo  I never get away from my base. All I worry about is us playing our best baseball. And I worry about our team, and getting us to perform up to the best of our ability, and try to keep the team going in a position to have success.”

Ramirez is on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

“I think as you look around our lineup you should have four players that are capable of hitting 20 or more home runs,” Colletti said. “One of them has only played a couple of games this year.”

Los Angeles is batting .226 with runners in scoring position, which ranks 23rd in the majors. The bullpen blew late leads in each of the past two games.

“We need to score more runs,” Colletti said. “We need to do better in the clutch, be better with runners in scoring position. I think if we were to do that  sbo  you’d see a different dynamic, including in the ‘pen.

“When you are asked to protect a 1-0 lead, or a 2-0 lead, or one-run leads, or close games every day, it takes a lot,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t do it. SBO REPORT:America’s Cup sailing suspended for review of boats and dangers

Clouds hung over the America’s Cup sailing regatta  sbo  on Friday after investigators asked the teams to temporarily halt practicing on blustery San Francisco bay following a deadly accident last week.

Organizers have said races will go ahead in July, despite growing public concerns over safety after a British champion sailor was killed when one of the sleek, ultra-fast AC72 catamarans built for the competition capsized and broke apart last Thursday.

They have left open the possibility of changes to the rules Of the race, brought to San Francisco by Oracle   sbo  co-founder Larry Ellison, whose team won the trophy in the 2010 event in Valencia, Spain.

After its first meeting on Thursday, a committee formed by organizers to review Swedish challenger Artemis Racing’s fatal accident asked the teams to suspend sailing both the 72-foot America’s Cup catamarans and the smaller AC45s until the middle of next week. The committee was due to meet with the teams on Friday.

Organizers have said they hoped to have recommendations from the committee within about two weeks. Among other factors, investigators will look at the  sbo  structure of Artemis’ “Big Red” yacht, which Regatta Director Iain Murray has said differed significantly from the catamarans of other competitors.

Teams in the America’s Cup are required to stay within rules governing the design of their yachts but they also have leeway to customize their vessels with hydrofoils and other technology.

The death of Artemis’ Andrew Simpson, a two-time Olympic medalist, marked the second time that an expert crew on one of the high-tech yachts, estimated to cost around $8 million each, lost control and flipped their boat in the heavy winds and rip currents of San Francisco Bay.

Simpson was trapped underwater   sbo  after the Artemis catamaran turned upside down and broke apart while training. Winds had been blowing on the water at 18 to 20 knots, or about 23 to 25 miles per hour, which race organizers described as typical for the bay.

On Thursday, crew mates from Artemis and the three other teams slated to vie for the trophy threw wreaths into the bay where he was killed.

YACHT CONTROVERSY

The America’s Cup rules allow the winner of the most recent event – in this case Ellison’s team – to choose the venue and regulations for the next challenge, a series of races that begin in July and go into September.

Hoping to attract wider interest in the sport, Ellison’s Oracle Team USA created specifications that led to ultra-lightweight, two-hulled vessels with   sbo  hard “wing” sails and hydrofoils that can lift most of the boat out of the water to reach speeds close to 50 mph.

But following the Artemis accident and an incident in October when Oracle’s catamaran capsized and was swept out to sea, criticism has grown that the boats may be too hard to maneuver in San Francisco’s Bay’s heavy winds and rip currents.

An Oracle team spokeswoman had no immediate comment on Friday, and a spokesman for the Artemis team could not be reached for comment. Artemis Racing has said it was in the process of conducting a review of the accident.

Prada fashion house  sbo  cofounder Patrizio Bertelli, who heads the Luna Rossa Challenge team, has arrived in San Francisco to meet with officials and was expected to hold a news conference later on Friday. Bertelli has complained that the 2013 America’s Cup regulations have transformed it into an extreme sport.

C.W. Nevius, a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, urged race officials to switch to the AC45s, which were used last year in early competitor eliminations, instead of the AC72s.

“The 72-foot catamarans are too much, too big, too powerful. Most of all, they are too dangerous,” Nevius wrote. “Someone needs to make a hard choice   sbo  and say the race will go back to the 45-foot catamarans that raced last summer.”

Andy Turpin, managing editor of Latitude 38, a Bay area sailing magazine that had asked readers to share their thoughts about the accident, said about 80 percent of his readers also want the regatta to be sailed in the smaller boats.

“One of our readers made the analogy to the early days of Formula One racing. The biggest criticism is that they haven’t been on the water long enough,” Turpin told Reuters.

While Oracle has two AC72s, and Artemis has a second yacht that it has yet to launch in San Francisco Bay, Luna   sbo  Rossa has only one. The fourth team, Emirates Team New Zealand, has only one fully commissioned AC72.

SBO REPORT: The Kings are staying in Sacramento, and Seattle will have to wait for another NBA franchise.

As for the ownership question that has  sbo  kept the Kings in limbo for years, Commissioner David Stern wants it settled now.

League owners voted Wednesday to follow the recommendation of their relocation committee and reject an aggressive bid to move the Kings, and Stern promptly announced that he hoped to have a deal in place in 48 hours with a group that wants to buy the team from the Maloof brothers.

“And now we think that because the Maloofs have overall been very good for Sacramento and the Kings and the NBA, that they will be motivated to do something   sbo  fast so that the franchise can get cracking,” Stern said.

The 22-8 vote by the Board of Governors rejected a deal that would have sold a 65 percent controlling interest at a total franchise valuation of $625 million to a Seattle group led by investor Chris Hansen, who boosted the offer twice after the NBA showed an unwillingness to relocate.

Now the Maloofs will try to complete a deal at Hansen’s original price of $525 million — still topping the NBA record of $450 million — with a group put together by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former All-Star guard, and fronted by TIBCO software chairman Vivek Ranadive. The plan  sbo  includes a new downtown arena.

“The committee decided — didn’t have any preconceived notions — but looking at both evenly they said that the edge went to the incumbent, so that’s the way it came out,” Stern said.

The vote ended an emotional saga that has dragged on for nearly three years. Hansen wanted to move the franchise and rename it the SuperSonics, who left Seattle for Oklahoma City in 2008 and were renamed the Thunder.

Hansen said in a statement posted on his website that he hoped  sbo  to pursue a minority ownership role with the Maloofs, but Ranadive said his partners “haven’t really considered” the Maloofs maintaining a stake in the franchise.

Stern praised Hansen’s proposal and said the NBA might consider expansion once a new TV deal is in place, but said “we don’t have anything concrete.”

“Our day will come, and when it does, it will just be that much sweeter for the struggle,” Hansen said.

It’s the second time since 2011 that the Maloof brothers have made plans that would have ended in relocation for the Kings. The first target was Anaheim, Calif., but Johnson convinced the NBA to give the  sbo  city another chance to finance a new arena.

Johnson delivered on a promise for a plan for a new downtown arena with help from Stern, but the Maloofs backed out, saying it didn’t make financial sense.

The Maloofs had another surprise when they announced a deal in January with Hansen’s group, which includes Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and members of the Nordstrom department store family.

Johnson fought back again, this time lining up an ownership group led by Ranadive and getting the Sacramento City Council to approve a non-binding financing  sbo  plan for a $447 million arena with a $258 million public subsidy.

“This is an ownership group that’s played to win and kept us in the game, and put us in a situation where ultimately over the next couple days, if things go right, we can close this out and move to a new chapter in Sacramento,” Johnson said.

The potential Sacramento ownership group also includes 24 Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov, former Facebook senior executive Chris Kelly and the Jacobs family that owns communications giant Qualcomm.

In a letter sent to the relocation and finance committees during its April 17 meeting, the Maloofs said they preferred to sell to  sbo  the Seattle group and expressed discontent with Sacramento’s bid, saying it fell “significantly short.”

After Wednesday’s vote, however, George Maloof denied that his family wasn’t willing to sell to the Ranadive group and that the league was pressuring them to do so.

“It’s been a fair process, a very fair process,” Maloof said.

Hansen spent nearly two years working to get an arena plan approved by the city and county governments and spent more than $65 million buying land in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood where the arena would be built. Hansen has a five-year   sbo  memorandum of understanding with the city and county on the arena plan.

A small crowd at a Seattle restaurant was subdued as word spread that the franchise wasn’t coming, while horns blared and cheers erupted from bars in Sacramento.

“In Kevin Johnson we trust,” said season ticket holder Jim Amen, who wore the jersey of No. 16 Peja Stojakovic, the Kings’ first-round draft pick in 1996. “This meant a lot to our city. It’s not just about basketball, but about revitalizing our downtown.”

About a dozen Sacramento   sbo  supporters wearing Kings jerseys and “Small Market Big Heart” T-shirts waited most of the day in the Dallas hotel to hear what turned out to be good news. But Johnson didn’t want to celebrate at the expense of a couple of men who showed up in green and gold Sonics gear.

“I went to Seattle,” he said. “I played against those fans in that community. It’s a great sports town, it’s a great basketball community. And for them to come up a little short, especially with what happened in 2008 to have lost their team, that’s  sbo  devastating. That’s why we fought so hard.”

SBO REPORT: Frank Lampard earned the top spot in the weekly Associated Press global soccer poll for the first time after setting Chelsea’s career goals record.

And a familiar name returned to the  sbo  top of the team rankings, with Barcelona ending Bayern Munich’s six-week stay following its 22nd Spanish league title.

The weekend also featured title celebrations at Paris Saint-Germain, which was fifth following its first French league championship since 1994.

Chelsea retained third as Lampard’s goals against Aston Villa on Saturday helped the club close in on a spot in next season’s Champions League.

The two goals raised the 34-year-old midfielder’s total during 12 years  sbo  with Chelsea to 203.

“He provided class and gave Chelsea what it needed to be sure of getting Champions League football next season,” said voter Aurelio Capaldi from Italian broadcaster RAI Sport.

SBO REPORT:SBO REPORT:America’s Cup accident highlights risks of high-tech approach

Less than 24 hours before a British sailor died  sbo  in an America’s Cup boating accident on San Francisco Bay, billionaire Larry Ellison, the mastermind behind this year’s competition for the world’s oldest sporting trophy, was celebrating his sailing triumphs at a red-carpet gala.

The exclusive party, held Wednesday at a newly completed cruise terminal that is serving as the America’s Cup headquarter, featured a flattering documentary film, “The Wind Gods,” produced by  sbo   Ellison’s son. The Oracle software company co-founder and CEO beamed as guests sipped wine and chatted about the upcoming races.

There was no mention in the public remarks of the many controversies that have dogged San Francisco’s first America’s Cup regatta, and organizers hoped the gala would mark a fresh start.

But the death on Thursday of Olympic gold medalist Andrew Simpson, who was trapped underwater after the Artemis Racing team’s 72-foot high-tech catamaran capsized and broke apart in a training run, was precisely the type of incident that critics of Ellison’s approach to the event feared.

The arcane rules of the America’s Cup allow the winner to decide where and how the next competition is held. Ellison and his team, now known as Oracle  sbo   Team USA, won the trophy in 2010 after a convoluted legal battle resulted in an unusual one-on-one competition with the then-defending champion, a team backed by Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli.

Ellison, an enthusiastic proponent of high-tech advances in sailing, then established a new organization, known as the America’s Cup Event Authority, to decide the location and the ground rules of the next challenge. The specifications for the boats led to ultra-lightweight, double-hulled vessels with hard “wing” sails and hydrofoils that can cruise at close to 50 mph.

But Thursday’s accident marked that second time that one of the sleek boats foundered amid the heavy winds  sbo   and rip currents of San Francisco Bay. And the expense and complexity of the high-tech approach may have discouraged potential participants and hurt the economics of the event: organizers had once expected as many as 14 challengers, but only three chose to compete.

“When you push the technology beyond the point of safety I’m not sure that’s good for any sport,” said Scott MacLeod, a managing director at the sports marketing firm WSM Communications who has worked closely with America’s Cup teams and sponsors for two decades.

The accident could conceivably lead to the outright cancellation of the races, or a last-minute switch to a different type of boat. The head of the   sbo  America’s Cup Event Authority, Stephen Barclay, told a Friday news conference that an investigation was under way and that “nothing is off the table.”

Assuming the regatta series moves ahead as planned, with the first races among the Cup challengers scheduled for July 4, organizers will have to work to prevent the accident from further undermining the event’s finances.

Private fund-raising efforts are supposed to defray any costs to the city of San Francisco, but thus far they have fallen short of the goals. And the city is scaling back its estimates of the economic benefits.

Mark Buell, chairman of San Francisco’s America’s Cup Organizing Committee, said a fundraiser scheduled  sbo   for Thursday evening had to be canceled, though he expressed confidence that the city would ultimately reach its goals.

HIGH TECH GAMBLE

Ellison had hoped to attract new interest in the sport with super-fast, high-tech boats that would sail close to the shores of San Francisco Bay.

Unlike past America’s Cup races, spectators would be able to see the action from shore, and advanced TV graphics along with the picturesque setting would make it uniquely broadcast-friendly. A preliminary “World Series” featuring smaller catamarans racing in San Francisco and other cities around the world was designed to  sbo   generate unprecedented interest.

But only three teams are challenging Ellison: Artemis Racing, bankrolled by a Swedish billionaire; Luna Rossa Challenge, backed by the Prada fashion empire; and a New Zealand team sponsored by the Emirates airline. That compares with 11 challengers the last time a full America’s Cup regatta was held in 2007.

Event Authority spokesman Tim Jeffery said the weak global economy was the main factor in limiting the number of challengers and sponsors. MacLeod and others point to the cost and complexity of the so-called AC72 boats, noting that it costs more than $100 million to mount a serious challenge.

A spokeswoman for Ellison declined to comment on the accident or whether the boat specifications had   sbo  affected participation.

The risks associated with the new boats first became clear last fall, when an Oracle boat flipped and was swept under the Golden Gate bridge and out to sea. No one was hurt in that accident, but the boat required millions of dollars and months to repair.

“To be successful, these boats have to be built fairly close to a point where they might fail. Minimizing weight and maximizing stiffness is kind of the mantra,” said Chuck Hawley, who has crossed the Atlantic in a catamaran and is now chairman   sbo  of safety at US Sailing, a governing body that promotes the sport.

The Artemis boat that broke apart on Thursday may be beyond repair, though the team has another boat. New Zealand and Luna Rossa, however, have only one boat each, and a mishap could knock them out of the competition altogether.

America’s Cup officials said it was too early to say whether the design of the boats is inherently flawed. “All we know is the boat ended up capsized, the hull upside down, broken in half,” said America’s Cup Regatta Director Iain Murray.

But Hawley and other observers said that based on pictures they had seen, it appeared the boat had a  sbo   structural failure that caused it to capsize, rather than the other way around. An Artemis spokesman could not be reached for comment.

“The question now is whether the participants think the death was a fluke or whether they think the boats and racing is inherently so dangerous that someone else could die,” said Richard Spindler, publisher of Latitude 38, a Bay Area sailing magazine, in an email.

“The America’s Cup is not supposed to be a life and death competition.”

LOCAL SKEPTICISM

Meanwhile, some in San Francisco remain critical of the city’s decision to support the event. The city’s costs were initially estimated at about $32 million and later scaled back to just over $20 million, and private fund-raising is supposed to  sbo   cover the bill.

But Buell acknowledged the fundraising had been “a heavy lift,” in part because of the diminished size of the event. The latest economic study shows a $900 million boost in local economic activity from the event, down from the $1.4 billion initially projected.

A spokeswoman from the mayor’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The deal with the city was contentious from the start, with Ellison’s team even threatening at the 11th hour to take the event to Newport, Rhode Island. An especially controversial part of the original  sbo   plan that would have given Ellison valuable development rights in exchange for renovating some piers was ultimately scrapped altogether.

“Many politicians have fallen prey to the America’s Cup mystique, complete with their swanky cocktail parties and silver trophy viewings,” said former San Francisco supervisor Aaron Peskin, a leading opponent of the city’s involvement in  sbo   the event. He called Thursday’s accident a “tragic irony.”

SBO REPORT:The Indianapolis 500 is getting its mojo back.

Rumors are flying, speeds are  sbo  increasing and an Andretti is trying to get back to Victory Lane. Yes, it’s starting to feel like the good old days in Indy.

“I’ve been feeling that resurgence ever since I came back over in 2009 and the momentum around the Indy 500 is just increasing,” said Dario Franchitti, the defending race winner who is trying to become the fourth member of the four-time winners club. “It’s growing in stature again.”

This year’s  sbo  race will be historic for other reasons.

For the first time since 1987, two three-time Indianapolis 500 winners — Franchitti and Helio Castroneves — are expected to be in the starting field. For the first time since 1991, excluding the years of the open-wheel split, Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi are arriving at the 2.5-mile oval without a win.

For a change, nobody’s talking about whether race organizers can fill the traditional 33-car field. They’re talking about whether any late additions could knock one of the 33 on the current entry list out of the starting field.

“I think it’s going to be exciting,” said Michael Andretti, the former   sbo  driver whose team has won three of this season’s first four races. “Some teams have not been so competitive in years past. But the racing this year has been at the top level and it has to be great for the fans. It’s as good as it’s ever been.”

Who would expect anything else with a field this talented?

Canadian James Hinchcliffe, one of five Andretti drivers trying to qualify next weekend, has won half of the first four races. Defending points champ Ryan Hunter-Reay, one of Hinchcliffe’s   sbo  teammates, won at Alabama but hasn’t been on the podium anywhere else. The current leader is 36-year-old Takuma Sato, the first Japanese driver to win an IndyCar race and the driver who crashed on the final lap last May as he tried to pass Franchitti for the lead.

“You go for the win, you know,” Sato said. “Anybody in that position would have done it.”

Meanwhile, the old guard — Castroneves, Franchitti and Tony Kanaan — all have their own issues to contend with.

Franchitti, who owns four series titles — three with Target Chip Ganassi — is trying to fight his way back into contention for the championship. When practice   sbo  opens Saturday, he’ll be 15th in the points. Castroneves has only two wins in his last 37 races, while Kanaan hasn’t reached Victory Lane since Iowa in 2010, a span of 41 straight races.

“Every year, I believe it’s the year,” Kanaan said Thursday while promoting the series’ next race at Belle Isle Park in metro Detroit. “Honestly, I’ve enjoyed going to Indy because of the way the crowd made me feel. I know I haven’t won there, but they make me feel wanted and welcome and they make me feel like a winner.”

But   sbo  qualifying weekend could have an old-time flair to it, too.

Most expect speeds to increase significantly in the second year of this engine-chassis combination. Last year, Ryan Briscoe took the pole with a four-lap average of 226.484 mph. This year, with the right conditions, that number could jump significantly.

“I think the pole speed will be close to 230, if not 230,” Andretti said.

Off the track, there’s just as much being discussed.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed a legislative bill this week that will give track officials $100 million in public financing to upgrade the facility. Potential projects  sbo  already being discussed include updating the seats, renovating the road course and adding lights at a speedway that has never had night racing.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Indy if there wasn’t endless speculation about who may find a late ride before the second and final day of qualifying ends on May 19. One name sure to surface, now that he has passed his rookie test, is Kurt Busch even though the 2004 Sprint Cup champion made it clear he’s not ready to try “The Double” this May.

” I think the proper thing is to go out and experience this car at another oval track and get into a race and   sbo  experience what the buffeting is and the movement of the car when all the downforce changes,” Busch said after posting a fast lap of 218.21 mph on Thursday.

All of it has given Indy an injection of excitement to opening day at the track.

“I think this race has an aura about it every year because it’s such a unique event,” Hinchcliffe said. “Our team will try to improve and other teams will try to improve as well, but none of that really matters till you roll the car out on   sbo  opening day.”

SBO REPORT:Roberto Castro opens with a 63 in Players debut

Roberto Castro made a debut he  sbo  won’t soon forget in The Players Championship, opening with a 9-under 63 Thursday to tie the course record at the TPC Sawgrass and build a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy and other early starters.

Facing the infamous island-green on No. 17 for the first time in competition, Castro left a 9-iron within a foot of the hole. On the daunting 18th, he hit 4-iron to a foot. When his day was over, Castro was in the record book with Greg Norman and Fred Couples for lowest score on the Stadium Course.

“I hit it close a lot,” said Castro, making it sound as easy as it looked.

Sawgrass finally made sense to McIlroy, too.

The two-time major champion had never made the cut or even  sbo  broken par at The Players Championship, but the 24-year-old figured it out on a gorgeous morning by dialing it back off the tee and letting his iron play take over. McIlroy never came seriously close to a bogey on his way to a 66, leaving him tied with Zach Johnson.

McIlroy didn’t hit driver once on the front nine, including the par-5 ninth. He made up his mind during practice that he gets into more trouble trying to reach the green in two, so he is playing short and relying on his wedge. He still made par on No. 9, but he stuck to his strategy.

“When you hit the shots, it seems very simple,” McIlroy said. “I had a lot of good shots out there, lot of iron   sbo  shots that were 12, 15 feet away from the pin and I got myself a lot of looks for birdies. I adopted maybe more of a conservative strategy off the tee this year. But once you put your ball in the fairway that means you can be more aggressive into the greens. So it sort of balances itself out.”

Among those playing in the afternoon were Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, who is under more scrutiny than ever. Singh shook the tournament on Wednesday when he filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour for what he said was a rush to judgment in trying to suspend him for an anti-doping violation. Singh sued just one week   sbo  after the tour dropped its case.

One man standing in the bleachers around the first tee was wearing deer antlers. Singh confirmed using deer antler spray, which led to the tour’s investigation.

Masters champion Adam Scott didn’t miss a beat from his last competitive round, a rainy Sunday at Augusta National. He missed only two fairways and two greens in a tidy round of 69. His only disappointment was not getting introduced as the Masters champion.

Scott and McIlroy were joined by Steve Stricker, who made six birdies and never once had honors on the tee — Stricker and McIlroy made birdies on the same six holes. Stricker wound up with a 67, along  sbo  with Hunter Mahan and Casey Wittenberg.

Henrik Stenson was among those at 68.

The Stadium Course has rarely been this vulnerable, with barely a trace of wind and some pins in bowls that allowed for good looks at birdie. Half the 72 players in the morning broke par.

But the punishment is never far away, as Scott Stallings discovered. He opened with five straight birdies to get everyone’s attention, but after going out in 31, Stallings gave most of it back with a bogey, double bogey and a triple bogey on the 16th when he hit two balls into the water. He shot 40 on the back for a 71.

“It just goes to show about the golf course and really how volatile it is,” Stallings said.

Castro hasn’t discovered that yet. This was a day when  sbo  everything went right.

He made three birdies early in his round on the back until making his tap-in birdies on the 17th and 18th. Then, he hit 3-iron into 3 feet on the par-5 second hole for an eagle and was 7-under through 11 holes. On the fourth, he hit his approach inside 2 feet for another birdie, and then he hit wedge to 18 inches on the sixth.

Castro had a birdie putt just outside 12 feet to break the course record, but missed it.

After his eagle on the second hole — his 11th of the round — Castro was reminded of a game he plays to try to birdie every other hole.

“When I eagled, I   sbo  was like, ‘Oh, now I’m 7 (under) through 11, so that’s keeping ahead of that 50 percent mark.’ But this is a different golf course,” he said. “The golf course is much harder than most of the other times I’ve kind of taken that attitude.”

Couples shot his 63 in 1992 in the third round. Norman opened with a 63 in 1994 when he went on to shatter the tournament record at 24-under 264. Castro put himself in good company, two players in the World Golf Hall of Fame, and two winners of The Players Championship. Not bad for a 27-year-old in only his second year on the PGA Tour.

Castro is not well known even in golf circles. His mother grew up in Peru and moved to America as a teenager along with her sister, Jenny Lidback, who played the LPGA Tour. He toiled in the minor leagues for five years after getting his industrial  sbo  engineering degree at Georgia Tech.

And he’s in the record book at The Players Championship. Sawgrass is rarely in short supply of surprises.

“It gets proven out here every week,” Castro said. “Derek Ernst won last week in his eighth event and no one ever heard of him. There are a lot of good players out here.”
